St. Simon Island, Georgia which is located in Glynn County utilizes double-sided, solar powered safety systems at the three main parks: Coast Guard, Massengale, and Gould’s Inlet.

CASE STUDY: St. Simon Island, GA

St. Simon Island in Glynn County has a robust seasonal lifeguard program that protects the main beach access points. However, the island is over 3 miles in length and has 41 designated access points. The county now utilizes SwimSmart system’s to remotely display hazard conditions. The county uses a hybrid approach utilizing local staff’s expertise to set hazard levels when on-site but falling back to NWS forecasts during off hours.

The sheer size of the beach on St. Simon poses a major challenge to protecting swimmers. There are a limited number of lifeguards and are outnumbered by the numerous access points. Glynn County uses SwimSmart signage at known problematic locations for a multi-layered safety approach.

Surviving the Elements

All SwimSmart components consist of corrosion resistant plastics and aluminum. Even the traffic light is constructed out of powder coated aluminum making it suitable for marine environments. Sensitive electronics are in sealed in water-proof enclosures and layered with corrosion resistant coatings. Communication equipment comes standard with lightning protection systems to provide robust operation even during storms.
