Warning Signage

Simple, rugged, beach warning systems.

Painted, sealed, metal frames coming soon!

BNL - Beach Notification Light

The long awaited successor of the archaic beach flag warning system.

Standardized Color Code

Conforms with standardized Red-Yellow-Green-Purple-Double Red beach warning paradigm.

Flat Traffic Light Design

Flat flush design with high contrast housing designed to cleanly mount of signage. Light extremely directional for line-of-sight viewing.

Autonomous Warnings

Change automatically based upon local National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts.

Manual Overrides

Manually "override" or set the colors through software applications. Override and revert to autonomy at discretion of the beach managers.

ADA Colorblind Format

Warning color code situated next to relevant colored hazard information. The signage always follows the same flow to provide uniform information to the public.

Dimming and Sleep Mode

Automated dimming feature adjusts based on ambient light. Sleep modes for park closed hours.

Warning Type Classification

Underlying beach hazards vary by location, however, uniform color coding and warning logic is imperative to streamline public adoption and understanding.

Dangerous Waves and Currents - Type 1

Dangerous waves and currents adopts the standardized color code of the most common implementation of the beach warning flag system - red, yellow, green, purple, double-red. The base warnings are broken into three tiers: high, medium, and low hazard.

Water Quality Warnings - Type 2

Many inland beaches that do not experience high wave action will experience water quality issues. Water quality warnings follow the same general color code - red, yellow, green. Unlike Type 1, water quality warnings designate one red as a closure.

Dangerous Waves, Currents, and Water Quality - Type 3

Beaches that experience both Type 1 and Type 2 hazards must be consolidated into a single warning system for the sake of the public. For Type 3, the water quality warnings are nested into the hazard classification. If closures are desired a double-red light is required.

Signage Configurations

Tailor electronic signage to fit your beaches hazards; all while maintaining standardization.

Water Closed Indication Light

Double red indication lights to explicitly order the water is closed to public.

Stinging Marine Life Indication Light

Specialized purple indication lights to address stinging marine life warnings.

Pier Closure Signage

On/Off red pier lights specifically addresing pier washoff from high waves or winds.

Standalone Signage Chassis

Clean self-contained chassis designed to cleanly contain all wires and cabinets in a clean lockable design featuring a swing door.

Building Mounted Signs

Similar to a fire alarm system, tuck electrical panels away and extend multiple signs around a single structure to maximize the system's utility.

Single or Double Sided

For scoreboard chassis, place signs back to back using the same electronics to cover more ground. Building mounted systems, not on solar, can support up to 4 signs.

Appendage Signage

Additional signage containing customer specific logos, websites, phone numbers, parks rules and more. Provide additional context beyond the standardized signage.

* Features are at various levels of development, please contact us for details.

Additional Features

Expand warning signage functionality into a myriad of verticals.

Weather and Environmental Observations

Improve nearshore hazard forecasting using a suite of observational equipment such as weather stations, buoys, cameras, and more. Onsite observations allow for highly localized forecasts tailoring BNL autonomoy to your beach.

Audible Alarms and Speakers

Garner beachgoers attention through audio alarm systems during events such as light changes. Schedule canned messages to streamline beach management.

Stream and Burst Cameras

Screen emergencies, monitor beach conditions, and better manage your beach resources and its patrons. From Pan-Tilt-Zoom to Infrared to cost-effective time lapse. We have a suite of cameras to fit every use case.

Ground Screws

First in the industry. Versatile and mobile mounting solutions necessitated by the harsh and volatile beach environment.

Compact Footprint

Ground screws offer low footprint structural platforms for rescue towers to stack on top off.

Locate Anywhere

Ground screws structures can operate even in silty sand by digging deep down with extendable length into a solid foundation.

Environmental Impact

Protect natural dunes, marine life, and wetlands using the slimmest possible foundation mitigating the impact.

Semi-Mobile Solution

Rescue stations on ground screws can be removed, lifted, and installed in other locations. In some cases re-using the same ground screw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our custom engineered lights focus on addressing the impact of glare on visibility. Our traffic light BNL has a recommended range of 1,000 feet line of sight in worst case “glaring-cloud” visibility. During dusk or cloudy situations the light is visible by many times the baseline distance.

All SwimSmart products bring their own private network to your beach. We specialize in remote connectivity providing reliable internet where others cant. We operate in some of the most remote locations in the country.

Warning signage can support either concrete pad or ground screw mounting. For ground screw implementations the unit can be mounted in almost any soil environment – including loose sand. Warning signage is meant for walkways, entranceways, parking lots, or integration into existing structures. We recommend setting the unit back behind the Mean High Water Line as dictated by local building code.

Our products have carefully engineered solar power options. These solar assemblies are designed to operate reliably throughout the season even during prolonged storms, salt spray, and nighttime. Battery systems ensure the system operates even when the sun doesn’t shine.

Warning signage is more suitable for quick information in passing. Less frequent updates such as Type 2 warnings usually only need one at the entrance. Type 1 or 3 should have them at high traffic ares. Typically a majority of the units should focus on the most populated parts of the beach but it’s equally important to provide proximate signs at known problematic areas.

While it’s difficult to leave hurricanes unscathed, SwimSmart assemblies are certified to meet or exceed regional wind ratings such as 90, 120, 140, 150, and 180 mph. Please contact us to determine applicable wind ratings in your area.

Our traffic light offers range control through dimming. Sleep mode turns the light off during park closed hours. The high directivity of the traffic light ensures light shines only where it is pointing and light pollution in surrounding areas drop off exponentially.

All components used throughout the unit are selected based upon its resistance to corrosion. Many metal components also receive galvanization, wet paint, and/or sealing coats to ensure a resilient finish. Touch up kits are available in the event a unit is scratched.

Depending on the stack configuration the signage height can vary. The length of signs is fixed at 48″. A 3 stack light (red-yellow-green) is 33.5″. A 5 stack is 48″. Appendage signs can further increase the height.

Our standalone chassis are 84″ tall. Adding solar to either a custom built or in-house chassis usually adds 4-6 feet.

As of now the current solar assemblies add another 4 feet bringing total height to 11 feet tall.
